Studying Interaction Design was not always an obvious path for me. I started my education at a German lower secondary school and studying at university was always a personal goal of mine. Through further education and my training as a graphic designer, I eventually found my way to Interaction Design at HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd.
Today, I am interested not only in how something looks, but especially in how people interact with it. I am particularly interested in medical and social topics and how design can make complex situations easier to understand and access. I believe good design should support people and give everyone the chance to participate, no matter how familiar they are with technology.

About Nema
Nema combines a Smart TV app, a motion-based controller and AI into one connected therapy system. Personalized exercises support daily home training, while physiotherapists can monitor progress and adapt therapy over time. The goal is to make therapy more accessible, continuous and easier to integrate into everyday life.

Everyday life
People with Parkinson’s disease rely on regular exercise to maintain their mobility, coordination and independence. However, therapy usually takes place only once or twice a week. Most exercises need to be continued independently at home, often without direct guidance or regular feedback.
This creates a gap between therapy sessions. Exercises become harder to maintain, progress is difficult to track and physiotherapists have only limited insight into their patients’ daily training. Although continuous exercise is an important part of Parkinson’s therapy, there is often no effective way to support this process outside the clinic.
Designed to motivate
Nema was designed with people, not the disease, in mind. The goal was to create a therapy system that feels encouraging, builds confidence and fits naturally into everyday life. Rather than reminding users of their condition, Nema creates a positive training experience that encourages regular movement and motivates people to continue training at home.
From the user interface to the controller, every detail was designed to make the experience as simple and motivating as possible. Clear interaction flows, intuitive interactions and personalized exercises support a training experience that fits naturally into everyday life and helps people continue their therapy independently.
Personalized delivery
Nema is prescribed by a doctor and then submitted to the patient’s health insurance provider. Through the existing digital infrastructure, the relevant patient data can be transferred to a cooperating medical supply provider. This allows the system to be assigned to a specific person without requiring users to complete an extensive registration process themselves.
The medical supply provider prepares the controller individually, stores the required user information and sends the complete Nema system directly to the patient’s home. By the time it arrives, the controller is already personalized and ready to use. In this way, Nema is integrated into existing healthcare structures and reaches patients through a simple and familiar process.
Personalized start
Before the daily training begins, Nema asks users about their current condition. Since mobility and physical capacity can vary from day to day for people with Parkinson’s disease, users indicate how they are feeling that day.
This assessment directly influences the upcoming training session, allowing its intensity, duration and level of support to be adapted to the individual situation.
Motion controller
The custom motion controller connects the Smart TV interaction with the recording of physical movements. Interaction was intentionally reduced to a single button, keeping inputs easy to understand and preventing users from having to remember complex controls during the exercises. At the same time, the controller captures movement throughout the training. This allows Nema to evaluate not only whether a cognitive task was answered correctly using the button, but also how the corresponding movement was performed.
The controller therefore connects physical exercise, the digital application and the later analysis. In this way, Nema combines a haptic training controller with a digital application for regular dual-task training.
Connected therapy
The Nema system includes a personalized card with an individual QR code. During a physiotherapy appointment, the code can be scanned using a mobile device. This clearly identifies the patient and opens the corresponding therapist view. The QR code is therefore not used to set up the controller, but provides simple and secure access to the training data that has already been collected.
The therapist view presents progress, recurring difficulties and long-term developments in a clear overview. Physiotherapists can understand how training is progressing at home, assess the patient’s current performance and select or adjust future exercises more precisely. This keeps independent home training connected to professional therapeutic care.
Continuous adaptation
In the background, Nema evaluates the movement and performance data collected during training. Motor and cognitive results are not viewed only within a single session, but compared over a longer period of time. This makes it possible to identify personal progress and highlight areas in which difficulties repeatedly occur. Based on this performance analysis, the system can respond specifically to individual weaknesses. Exercises and difficulty levels are selected to strengthen areas that require additional training without overwhelming the user.
At the same time, the results are prepared for physiotherapeutic review.
The AI does not replace therapeutic decisions, but supports Nema and healthcare professionals in adapting the training to the user’s actual performance over time. The concept therefore includes difficulty adjustment from an exercise pool as well as the long-term observation of progress and weaknesses.
